A survey of African-American drama from the early nineteenth century through the Harlem Renaissance to contemporary theatre, examining its relationships to the oral tradition and to literary, social, and political influences. Includes such writers as James Baldwin, Amiri Bakara, Alice Childress, Pearl Cleage, Langston Hughes, Suzan-Lori Parks, Ntozake Shange, Anna Deavere Smith, August Wilson, and George C. Wolfe.
