Course Information: American Government  (50109)

A comprehensive study of the origins, principles, structures, processes, and practices of American government, emphasis on various perspectives on democratic theory and practice of governmental institutions.

Required Materials:   American Government: Fourteenth Edition. Walter E. Volkomer: (Pearson Education, Inc.), ISBN-13:978-0-205-25173-5.
Technical Requirements:   Student grade performance will be measured based upon the successful completion of the following assignments and activities: 1. Class Participation (15%) - The class participation grade will include the following elements: regular and prompt attendance; evidence of completed assignments and preparation for each class; and the quality of contributions to classroom discussions. 2. Quizzes (20%) - There will be two reading quizzes over the course of the term. They are designed to reward you for reading at a deeper level and for reflecting upon the contents of the text. The quizzes will begin promptly at the beginning of class and will only last approximately 10 minutes in length. It is important for you to be prepared to do well on the quizzes. Take them seriously. Study questions will be posted on eLearning prior to quiz days. (QEP:3) 3. Briefing Memos (20%) – Students will be required to write two briefing memos (3 to 5 pages) over the course of this term. Topics and the appropriate format will be presented and discussed in class prior to making the assignment for each briefing memo. The briefing memos are designed to reward you for your capacity to research, analyze and synthesize specific information related to this course. The memos should reflect a thorough understanding of the topic; capacity to utilize the appropriate format; and the ability to apply accepted rules of grammar. 4. Group Project- Written Report (15%) – Each student will participate as a member of a working group (4 maximum) to product a paper ( approximately 10 pages) that will provide an in depth discussion and analyzes of a specific public policy issue. Students will be rewarded for their capacity to collaborate effectively with their peers and produce a coherent and informative document. The paper should reflect a thorough understanding of the topic; capacity to utilize the appropriate format; and the ability to apply accepted rules of grammar. 5. Group Presentation (10%) – Each group as described above will be responsible for delivering an in- class presentation on their public policy paper. Groups are encouraged to be creative in their presentations – utilizing a variety of media formats and styles. However, each presentation must be professionally presented within the allotted timeframe. 6. Final Exam (20%) – The final exam will be designed to assess a student’s cumulative knowledge of the course materials.
