Course Description: This course presents certain topics in algebra and trigonometry in a form that will prepare students for a later study of calculus as well as to prepare all students for successful management of their present and future daily mathematical needs. Topics include functions and their graphs, inverse functions, exponential and logarithmic functions, trigonometric functions and their inverses, analytic trigonometry, and applications of trigonometric functions. Course Pre-requisites: Passing grade (C or above) in MATH 1111 – College Algebra. Expected Student Learning Outcomes: Students demonstrate their knowledge for mathematics in the real world such as fractions, decimals, percentage, order of operations, and basic algebraic skills Required Text(s) and Supplemental Readings: Required Textbook: We will be using Pre-calculus, (9th edition) by Larson. Recommended Reading: Reading material from the textbook should be sufficient. Recommended tool: A basic scientific calculator will be allowed for tests and exams. Cell phones calculators are prohibited – there is no way you will be allowed to use your cell-phone during test/exams. Course Requirements and methods of Assessment: Homework: Homework will be assigned through Web-Assign. Usually, there will be 4/5 days to work on a particular homework. After the deadline is past, there will be still 96 hours (4 days) for you to complete the assignment. You just have to do a manual, automatic extension request to give yourself this 4 days’ of extension. But, for any problem submitted during this 4-day period, 20% will be deducted. After that, there will be no extension! And, furthermore, no request for extension will be entertained! Please read the last page of this syllabus to find more information about Web-Assign. Quiz: Quiz will be given to students regularly. Some quizzes will be take-home and some of them will be in-class based on the contents just taught. So, if you miss class that particular day, you will be missing the quiz that day. There will be no opportunity to make up a missed quiz. In case of take-home quiz, late submissions will not be accepted for grading. All quizzes will be returned. Quizzes are extremely important resources while preparing for the tests/exams. Methods of Instruction: Mainly lecture during the class meeting. That is why, attending classes is very important and missing classes will hurt your chance of passing the course heavily. You must prepare yourself to attend each and every class. If you miss more than 1 classes during the minimester, your chance of passing this course will be decreased drastically. Attendance (sign-in) sheet must be signed in the beginning and at the end of the class for being considered as present for any particular day. Examinations: Four examinations (including midterm and final) are scheduled and will typically consist of multiple-choice. If you miss an exam, you will be allowed to make it up only if you have an excused absence as defined by the Savannah State University Catalog. If you miss an exam, you must contact the instructor as soon as possible in order to schedule an immediate make-up date. Tests will be returned. Midterm and the final exams will not be returned. If you want to see where you went wrong with the test or just discuss about the test, you must meet the instructor during office hours or by scheduling an appointment. Meeting with the instructor outside of office hours requires an appointment. Grading Standards/Scale and Dates and topics to be covered *All dates and weights are tentative. Class Attendance Policy: Attendance is essential and expected and furthermore, it is SSU policy. Conscientious attendance is needed for a confident determination of your mastery of the subject matter to be made. A student is considered to be non-attending if he comes in after attendance has been taken, leaves early, or misses class activities. Even a few absences may make it impossible to pass the class. Habitual late-comers may be refused to enter the classroom because this tends to disrupt everyone’s concentration. Please show courtesy to your fellow classmates and in the event of an absence, you are responsible for all missed materials, assignments, and any additional announcements or schedule changes given in class. Class disruptions of any kinds (including coming late, trial of early leaving, wandering during class, leaving all cellular phones and pagers ringing, conversing with your fellow students, etc.) will not be tolerated and may result in your removal from the classroom and a lower final grade. All cellular phones, pagers, and other electronic equipment should be turned off during the class period. Class Participation: During class time questions, comments and feedbacks are strongly encouraged. I expect you to participate actively in class: asking and answering questions, sharing ideas, and working on problems, for example. When working in groups, you are part of a learning team. You are responsible for both your own learning and that of your teammates. As a team, you will work together to complete activities in the given time and present your work to your classmates. Obviously all of this requires your attendance. I expect all students to attend all classes. I repeat that if you must miss a class, you are accountable for any material covered, and it is your responsibility to make up any work that you may have missed. You must not expect the instructor to re-teach the materials you have missed – neither during subsequent classroom lecture nor during office hour sessions. Absences from class, even if excused, will affect your grade in the course adversely. Savannah State University endeavors to provide optimum conditions for student learning. Class attendance is, therefore, required of students to ensure that they will be exposed to the many classes, laboratories, and related experiences provided for their benefit. Extenuating circumstances may at times make it difficult for students to attend every class meeting. Students who are unable to attend a class should notify the professor in a timely manner and arrange the conditions under which any required work may be made up. Credit may or may not be awarded for any course if the number of absences exceeds the number of times that the class meets per week. Students who exceed the allowed number of absences in any course may receive a grade of “F” or be administratively withdrawn. Students who are withdrawn at or before mid-semester will receive a grade of “W”; students withdrawn after mid-semester will receive a grade of “WF” unless extenuating circumstances occur (see “Grading System”). Students may not withdraw from Academic Assistance (Learning Support) courses. Withdrawal from these courses results in an automatic cancellation of registration and withdrawal from the University. During the first week of each semester, professors will notify each class of the attendance policy, emphasizing what constitutes excessive absences and the penalty, therefore. Students may appeal any absence-related decision of a professor to the department chair, to the dean of the professor’s college or director of the division, and ultimately to the Vice President for Academic Affairs. Attendance at all classes is expected and is SSU policy. I repeat, habitual late-comers may be refused to enter the classroom because this tends to disrupt everyone’s concentration. Politeness will be greatly appreciated. Also, your cellphone should be kept in silence mode. During lecture, you must NOT use your cellphone for any reason. Mathematics Department Class Rules: 1. No eating /smoking during class hours. 2. No formulae for all tests/exams. 3. No calculator for all tests/exams. 4. No cheat sheet for all tests/exams. 5. No disruptive use of electronic devices including mobile phones, tablets, laptops during entire class hours. 6. A student who is inexcusably absent from class on a day on which a test or examination announced in advance is given will receive the grade of "F" and will not have the opportunity of making up the test. 7. A student who is inexcusably absent from class more than 3credit hours will receive the grade of F regardless of all previous performances. 8. A student who attempts to cheat (touching electronic devices, using calculators, using cheat sheet, peaking other students’ answers/notebooks/textbooks, etc.) on in-class quizzes/tests/exams will receive the grade of F regardless of all previous performances. Note: Students who violate Math Department Class Rules 1or 5 will be asked to leave classrooms politely. Academic Honesty/Academic Irregularity: Academic irregularity includes academic dishonesty, such as cheating and plagiarism; knowingly furnishing false information; forgery, alternations, or unauthorized use of University documents, records, identification, or property to gain an un-entitled advantage; taking or attempting to take, steal or otherwise procure in an unauthorized manner any material pertaining to the conduct of a class, including, but not limited to, tests, examinations, laboratory equipment and roll books; and selling, giving, lending or otherwise furnishing to any unauthorized person, material containing questions or answers to any examination scheduled to be given at a subsequent date in any course of study offered by the University. Plagiarism is prohibited. Themes, essays, term papers, tests and other similar requirements must be the work of the individuals submitting them. Direct quotations, paraphrased material, summaries of ideas of others must be appropriately acknowledged and attributed to their sources. Students agree that by taking this course all required papers may be subject to submission for textual similarity review to Turnitin.com for the detection of plagiarism. All submitted papers will be included as source documents in the Turnitin.com reference database solely for the purpose of detecting plagiarism of such papers. You should submit your papers in such a way that no identifying information about you is included.
